Great Green Belt Walk around Albrighton South

Campaigners invited the village on a 2.8 mile family walk around the land earmarked for 800 homes, finishing at The Crown.

Albrighton Development Action Group (ADAG) organised the Great Green Belt Walk to show the scale of the land that would be developed under the Albrighton South scheme, and to raise money for its part in the public inquiry.

The route

The 2.8 mile circular walk set off at 1.30pm on Saturday 12 September from opposite the Co-op on the High Street. It looped round via Cross Road and Newhouse Lane, taking in much of the 48 hectares of farmland in question, and finished at The Crown, where there was live entertainment. The group said it was suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Walkers were encouraged to wear green and to collect sponsorship, with prizes for the top three fundraisers.

Why it was held

ADAG volunteer Sharon Baker said the group sees the case as one of the biggest green belt disputes in the country, and one that could set a precedent for other communities. At the time ADAG had raised close to £50,000 for planning and legal experts and was looking for a final £10,000 to cover the inquiry.

The group joined Shropshire Council as a Rule 6 party at the inquiry, which gives it formal standing to present evidence and question the developer's witnesses. The council's planning committee refused the application unanimously in December 2025.
